Storyline:
Gulabo Sitabo, the film which released on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, stars Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurana in key roles. Set in Lucknow, it tells the story of two men squabbling over a crumbling Lucknow mansion. Mirza Nawab (Bachchan) would love to get rid of Baanke (Khurrana) and his family, and have his beloved Fatima Mahal all to himself. That is right after the real owner, his wife Begum Fattoo, passes on. A feisty Baanke has no plans to oblige and matches Mirza barb-for-Lucknowi-barb. If and how the two reconcile their differences forms the rest of the story.
The real Gulabo Sitabo of Uttar Pradesh
The inspiration for the title, perhaps even the plot, comes from a pair of glove puppets popular in Uttar Pradesh. Gulabo Sitabo are two characters created by puppeteer Ram Niranjan Lal Srivastava in the early 1950s. At the centre of the story (but largely irrelevant) is a man whose wife Sitabo and mistress Gulabo are squabbling for his attention and affection.
